Workshop on “Provincial Biomass Energy Planning” kicks off in Viet Nam

On January 25, GGGI in collaboration with the Soc Trang Department of Industry and Trade (DOIT) organized a consultation workshop entitled “Provincial Biomass Energy Planning”, which was led by GGGI Director-General Frank Rijsberman and Mr. Vo Van Chieu, Director of Soc Trang DOIT. Held in the Soc Trang province, the workshop was attended by around 80 representatives of the private sector and investors as well as officials of the Soc Trang Department.

The workshop is under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) to scale up renewable energy, in particular, biomass energy in Viet Nam. The outcome of the project will support an increase in green energy production, and consequently a reduction in emissions, through the adoption of biomass energy planning that will be implemented and result in the financing of biomass waste-to-energy projects.

With regards to policy support, GGGI is currently working with the Soc Trang province to develop their provincial biomass energy planning, which will assess the biomass potential for energy production in the province as well as create a list of potential biomass energy projects to attract investors. The draft biomass energy planning, presented for consultation with stakeholders and successful experience from Thailand, was also shared during this workshop.

Following the workshop, GGGI together with the government visited the Soc Trang Sugar Corporation, which already installed 12 MW boiler using bagasse waste.
