The Role of Carbon Markets in Recovering from COVID-19

On 11 November 2020, GGGI Director-General, Dr. Frank Rijsberman was invited to speak at the Opening Plenary Session of the ICAP-IETA Carbon Markets Virtual Pavilion. GGGI also co-hosted side events with the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment (NMCE) and the Swedish Energy Agency (SEA) who fund the two Carbon Pricing/Article 6 programs currently being implemented in five of our partner countries:

  • Designing Article 6 Policy Approaches (DAPA) program (GIS03-E1) – Indonesia, Morocco
  • Mobilizing Article 6 Trading Structures (MATS) program (GIS04-E1) – Cambodia, Ethiopia, Nepal

Over 300 people from all over the world attended the sessions.

Amid the backdrop of COVID impacts and economic recoveries, growing attention is being paid to the promise of carbon markets to efficiently reach climate goals while simultaneously supporting other socio-economic objectives. Today’s mature markets, hold years of experience. How are today’s major carbon markets evolving and weathering the challenges of 2020?
