Project Background, Outcomes and Impacts

Background: As per Qatar’s revised NDC, a national MRV system will be designed to measure and validate progress towards NDC commitments. In this regard, GGGI delivered a scoping assessment in 2019 for the Government of Qatar to understand existing local experience (i.e., in oil and gas sector), gaps, and overall roadmap for establishing a national MRV system. GGGI also carried out an MRV capacity development and stakeholder consultation workshop to validate the scoping assessment.  Building on these efforts, GGGI Qatar aims to develop a national MRV system for Qatar to help the country prepare for more stringent reporting requirements of the Paris Agreement; achieve a systematic, integrated, and robust GHG data management system that can help facilitate effective reporting, planning, financing, and implementation of climate actions; and strengthen local capacity of stakeholders in managing and implementing MRV processes.

Outcomes: Improved accuracy and transparency in monitoring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions in key sectors in Qatar in line with international standards

Impacts: Effective reduction of greenhouse gases in line with the revised NDC target
