Karakalpakstan Mission: GGGI visited Nukus to meet with key implementation partners of the Aral Sea GRIP Project

Nukus, September 27-30, 2021 – Under the framework of the “Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea Crisis” (Aral Sea GRIP) Project, GGGI’s Uzbekistan country team conducted a technical consultation mission to Nukus in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, from September 27-30, 2021. During the mission, GGGI held high-level meetings with key ministries and development organizations to discuss frameworks for enhancing cooperation, identify possible synergies, and seek recommendations to improve the implementation of the Aral Sea GRIP Project. Key ministries visited included, the:

  • Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan
  • Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade
  • Ministry of Innovation and Development
  • Ministry of Agriculture
  • State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection (SCEEP)
  • State Committee on Forestry
  • other development organizations

As an outcome of this mission, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade (MIFT), First Deputy Minister, (Mr. Jollibekov Vladimir Bakhtiyarovich) and GGGI’s Country Representative (Dr.Aaron Russell) discussed establishing GGGI’s project office in Nukus city within the premises of MIFT.

Moreover, GGGI held a discussion with the Chairman of the Karakalpakstan Council of Ministries, Mr. Sariyev Kaxraman Ramatullaevich. As an outcome of this dialogue, the Chairman agreed to join the project steering committee, endorsed the project to proceed with project implementation, and committed to provide all necessary support for engagement with local authorities.
