GGGI signs its first GEF grant to deliver CBIT project in Fiji

Suva, Fiji – 14 February 2022 – GGGI has signed a USD 1.4 million grant with UN Environment Program (UNEP) and Fiji Ministry of Economy (MOE) to implement a 3-year Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). CBIT aims to ‘Strengthen capacity to ensure transparency of action implemented and support received to implement Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) and Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS).

As Co-Executing Agency and technical support partner, GGGI will provide necessary expertise to implement the activity and deliver outputs in a manner that maximises the prospect of achieving the goals and outcomes of the CBIT project.

The three defined outcomes of Fiji’s CBIT project include: First, Fiji’s institutional arrangements for the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) are formalised and strengthened to enable regular transparent reporting on NDC implementation and National GHG inventory. Second, an IT-based GHG inventory preparation system enables the coordinating entity [MOE, Fiji] to efficiently co-ordinate preparation of transparent, consistent, comparable, complete, and accurate National GHG inventories. Third, Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems strengthened to enable Fiji in tracking and transparently reporting on NDC implementation and resultant GHG emissions and climate finance.

This 3-year project will be first of its kind that GGGI will implement in Fiji. This will assist GGGI’s capability in delivering similar MRV assignments in the region and globally.
