GGGI AT COP15 ON DESERTIFICATION

UNCCD CoP 15 was held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire from May 9 to 20, 2022. This was GGGI’s first participation at the desertification CoP, marked by a video message from P&C of GGGI Mr. Ban Ki Moon, and a statement from DDG Mrs. Helena Mcleod at the Heads of State summit, in which GGGI pledged a mobilization of 100 million USD for the Abidjan Legacy Program.

The delegation participated to the Youth forum, the Gender Caucus Forum chaired by the First Lady of Cote d’Ivoire, Mrs. Dominique Ouattara.

The GGGI delegation had a meeting with UNCCD and  organization’s committee to discuss the implementation of Abidjan Legacy Programme which aims to curb deforestation and the support the restoration of forests, improvement of agricultural production, optimization of current value chains to make them sustainable, and the identification of future value chains.

At the of the 15th CoP, GGGI signed MoUs with Banque Ouest Africaine de Developpement (BOAD), and United Nations Integrated Strategy for Sahel (UNISS) and a Letter of Intent with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Advanced discussions were also initiated with Électricité de France (EDF) with a view to signing a partnership soon.

At the conference, GGGI paneled 4 side events which brought together nearly 300 people under the following topics:

  • Innovative Finance Mechanisms for Sustainable Landscape with AfDB, GCF, IFAD, BNI and AFD
  • Launch of the publication of the Africa Green Growth Readiness Report co-organized by AfDB and GGGI
  • Climate Smart Agriculture and Women with AfDB, IFAD, EDF, UK Embassy and IDEF NGO
  • Inclusive and climate change resilient development in Sahel through low carbon transition and agroforestry with Alliance Sahel, UNCCD, FAO, WFP, GIZ

Additionally, GGGI also had a booth which welcomed more than 160 people and provided space to showcase our global initiatives and country activities.

The next UNCCD meeting will be held in Saudi Arabia (COP16 in 2024), Mongolia (COP17 in 2026), and Uzbekistan (Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention in 2023)
