GGGI and ISSLA formalize partnership on joint research and knowledge sharing activities

Hanoi- 06 June 2018- Viet Nam’s Institute of Labor Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today to formalize a cooperation framework to promote green growth, research and joint activities in the areas of capacity building and development of green economic growth options for Viet Nam.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Dao Quang Vinh – Director of ILSSA and Mr. Adam Ward –  GGGI’s Viet Nam Country Representative. Under this MOU, both GGGI and ILSSA will pursue mutual collaboration and cooperation in the following areas: identifying areas of joint research and promoting joint research projects, especially around green growth and green employment; sharing and disseminating institutional knowledge and experience on research, policy, institutional frameworks and organization and implementation of green growth strategies through joint publications, workshops, conferences and seminars; supporting organization of workshops, seminars and training courses on topics of mutual interest; and other relevant areas.

Viet Nam has enjoyed rapid economic growth over the past twenty years, bringing about social improvements, but also raising new challenges. In 2012, the Government adopted the Viet Nam Green Growth Strategy (VGGS), setting clear objectives for green growth development in various industries and sectors including green job creation.

Falling under the framework of this MOU, together with ILSSA, GGGI will conduct a Green Growth and Employment Program. It will be initiated with assessments of current state of green jobs and key gaps in green economy skills in Viet Nam. Understanding the state of green jobs and green skills gap would provide practical understanding of the state of green growth transition at sectoral level and contribute to effective policy formulation on employment creation from green growth.

“Understanding the benefits of green growth to employment creation is crucial as countries make the transition to an inclusive, sustainable, low carbon development path. ILSSA is the leading research institute in Viet Nam on labor policy and together with GGGI’s green growth expertise, this project will provide the necessary analytical evidence for Vietnamese decision makers’ to fully embrace the green economy” said Adam Ward.

Dr. Vinh highly appreciated the support from GGGI and committed to work with the organization to formulate and implement green growth plans in Viet Nam, noting that green growth represents the economy and employment of the future for Viet Nam.

Via this MOU, GGGI will support the Government of Viet Nam to assess the potential for green job creation and provide solid policy recommendations on employment creation from green growth.
