Sustainable Affordable Housing in Phnom Penh

By 2030, an estimated 3 billion people worldwide will need new adequate housing and basic infrastructure, according to the World Bank. Cambodia is no stranger to this challenge. Its capital city, Phnom Penh, is growing exponentially. Phnom Penh is now home to 2.2 million people, and the number will only keep increasing. Currently most housing units are unaffordable for 60 to 70 % of the population.

As Phnom Penh keeps expanding, it is important to make the city inclusive to everyone. In a recent study, the Global Green Growth Institute partnered with People in Need and Planète Enfants & Développement to explore the landscape of affordable housing in Phnom Penh in its relation to sustainability. We look at existing policies relating to affordable housing sector in Cambodia, analyse access to finance and investigate how sustainability can be put at the core of affordable housing.
